Our first winter festival was a huge success! Proudly wearing their student council t-shirts, workers were excited to see all of their decorations, games, and snacks being enjoyed by the visitors. It was a day filled with great learning opportunities, social interactions, and pure fun. With spring just around the corner, they are already thinking about what to do next.
Month: January 2020
Service Above Self
Members of the Pompton Lakes Rotary Club delivered an important message to our third graders this month. They explained the importance of helping others and finding ways to make the world a better place. Simple acts of kindness and good deeds are things that people can do at almost any age. The guest speakers encouraged our young students to get involved with their communities. As part of their annual tradition, the Rotarians brought us some special gifts. Each student received a new dictionary along with an inspirational journal so that they could jot down their ideas. We are so thankful to the Rotary Club for all that they do around the globe and for taking the time to talk with our students each year.
A Flurry of Excitement
Student Council is going to host WLC’s first indoor Winter Festival at the end of January! A few weeks ago, members brainstormed about games, decorations, and crafts that would be fun for the whole school community. Since then, they have been working together to bring these ideas to life. Student Council members can’t wait to welcome visiting homerooms and help their peers enjoy the many activities that will be available throughout the day.
Lending a Hand to Some Furry Friends
We had a wonderful experience volunteering at the Alan Purcell Wayne Animal Shelter. After the staff showed us what needed to be done, we split up into teams to wash dishes, wipe counters, fold laundry and clean crates. The cats watched curiously as we swept and mopped the floors. While we were there, other volunteers fed the animals and cleaned their litter boxes. It was very exciting to meet a few of the dogs and take them on a long walk. They were very energetic and eager to get some fresh air and exercise. Everyone on the trip agreed that it felt great to help animals who were waiting to find their forever homes. Thank you so much to the directors of the PAWS program for making this experience possible for us. We hope to go back again soon!
Cookie Basics
Whether you are making them from scratch or using ready-made dough, cookies are fun to bake. Unless the goal is to make one big cookie, you need to how far apart to space them and how many can fit in a row on the cookie sheet. The importance of using gloves, setting the correct oven temperature, wearing oven mitts, and allowing the cookies time to cool are just some of the lessons to be learned in the kitchen. The smell of freshly baked cookies will surely attract many people, so make sure that you have enough to share!
Feeding People and Fostering Compassion
Eva’s Kitchen, located in Paterson, NJ, was founded in 1982 to feed the hungry and working poor. In addition to serving meals to guests in the kitchen, chefs prepare meals for men, women, and children who reside in the recovery and sheltering programs at Eva’s Village. This adds up to 1,300 meals per day. We brought a group of service-minded students and staff to help set tables, serve coffee, and deliver nutritious meals to a large group of people in need. It was a great opportunity for us to begin the New Year with an act of kindness.
Help on Both Ends of the Leash
Over the past eight years, many special puppies and dogs have taken part in PAWS. This little one stole our hearts from the moment we met him. Baby T, a very sweet five-year-old, was timid at first but eventually met everyone and happily accepted treats. Learning how to put dogs at ease and show them kindness is a wonderful experience for our students. We are very grateful to the volunteers who continue to bring the PAWS program to Windsor.
Go Wildcats!
We recently had our first basketball game of the year. It was great to see our players in action as they hustled up and down the court. It’s going to be another awesome season!
